I recently photographed debut novelist Clare Docherty for a new set of author headshots at her home in North London.

We made the most of both the indoor and outdoor spaces, creating a varied collection of natural, relaxed portraits.

Inside, we photographed Clare at her desk, capturing some more personal images that felt connected to her writing. We also created a selection of portraits outdoors, using the light and surroundings to give the photographs a completely different feel.

I love shooting author headshots at home because it gives us plenty of opportunities to create images that feel personal rather than staged. We can move between different spaces, change the light and backgrounds, and build a gallery of photographs that works across websites, social media, publicity and book promotion.
